Indian Police Sitting at a Table, 1905

Description:

Ten Native American men stand or sit around a small table piled with papers and guns. Two of the seated men wear badges, and may be deputies of the Indian agent or members of the reservation police. Up until the 1890s, the agency did not have a police unit of its own, relying instead on the Army to police reservation lands. The man sitting on the far left and the man on the far right with the badge have been identified as belonging to the Nez Perce band on the Colville Indian Reservation.
